Colby, 9, and Cate Lutz, 7, enthusiastically anticipate their birthday party each year. They determine a theme, invite their guests and eagerly await a shower of money and gifts. But, it’s not your typical birthday party. All donations are given for patients at Riley Hospital for Children.

For Matt and Amy Lutz, they have taken the opportunity of celebrating their children’s birthday as a chance to teach the value of philanthropy. The Lutz family started the event in the summer of 2002, shortly before their son Colby’s first birthday.

About 30 families (close to 100 people) attended the first Colby and Cate Annual Birthday Bash. The party resulted in a collection of more than $1,000 in monetary donations as well as gifted toys and art supplies for Riley Hospital. In 2010, more than 500 guests - including Indianapolis Colts players and cheerleaders - attended Colby and Cate’s Birthday Bash, resulting in a collection of more than $45,000 as well as toys and art supplies.
