Torch Relay 5K Benefits Riley Hospital

The Indianapolis Torch Relay will take place Saturday, September 17 starting on the lawn of the Indiana State Museum at 11 a.m. This 5K family-friendly walk/run follows the White River Canal Walk and is part of a unique multi-day event where participants raise money for their local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospital. Riley Hospital for Children is the only hospital affiliated with CMN Hospitals in the state. All proceeds go directly to Riley Children’s Foundation in support of cancer research being done at the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research.

“Taking a role in Torch Relay is a huge motivator to my daughter,” says Mikel Hartman, father of 4-year-old Elisa, a Riley kid. “We make it about her and kids like her. The Torch Relay allows us to tell a story about kindness and caring for others. We participate because there’s critical cancer research being done at Riley. But participation is a real life lesson for my daughter. She learns that sometimes people help you, and then you help them.”

Indianapolis is one of 21 cities where Torch Relay will take place in 2016. Since the first Torch Relay in 2002 the event has raised more than $11 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This year’s theme is “Everyday Heroes” and parents and kids are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero. The event is sponsored by Visa, Marriott International, Marriott Vacations Worldwide and CDW and is supported by Indianapolis Marriott properties.
