In May 2007 Luke Andritsch of McCordsville, Ind., woke up with a slight fever and complained of ear pain to his parents, Todd and Vicky Andritsch.

An emergency care clinic confirmed a double ear infection that could be cured with a few rounds of antibiotics. Still, the Andritsch family sought a second opinion. Luke’s pain intensified as he was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for further tests.

Later that day, the Andritsch family was notified that their 3-year-old son had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood leukemia.

Luke, 6, is now in his third year of treatment at Riley Hospital. Todd Andritsch, Luke’s father, said Riley is an incredible facility.

“The doctors and nurses at Riley have been fantastic,” said Andritsch. “Luke looks forward to seeing everyone, and it really makes you feel good about having to be there.”

Luke’s treatment is scheduled to end this July.

In recognition of their son, the Andritsch family has organized “Team Luke,” which is comprised of 55 team members that will participate in the annual Bop to the Top benefiting Riley Hospital. The 36-story stair climb event will be held at the OneAmerica Tower in downtown Indianapolis on Jan. 27. This is the Andritsch’s third year participating in Bop to the Top.

“It’s a way to give back to the kids and give back to Riley,” Todd added. “It’s not just about raising the money, but also about raising the awareness of Riley.”

Luke and his family look forward to the end of his treatment and plan on having a celebration with their family and friends.

“Luke takes everyone by the hand, lets them squeeze his pillowy soft cheeks, and leaves a lasting impression in their heart,” said Luke’s mother, Vicky Andritsch.
