A Magical Place – Why I Give to Riley
Sally Dunn has worked as a registered nurse at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health for six-and-a-half years. As part of The Gift of Hope Happens Here holiday season giving campaign, Sally shares why her family gives back to the hospital that has been part of her life since college.
Q: Tell us about your role at Riley, and what drew you to this type of work.
A: I am a registered nurse in the Urology outpatient clinic. My original degree is from Indiana University-Bloomington in Journalism. I participated in IU Dance Marathon as a dancer in 2006 and on the Riley Development committee in 2007. This sparked my interest in pediatric nursing and I decided to go back to nursing school. I was lucky enough to land a job at Riley as a new graduate and have been here ever since!
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your work?
A: We follow some of our patients from birth and to see how they change, mature and handle themselves is incredible. I don’t think our patients and families realize how much they encourage and inspire us staff members.
Q: What has inspired you to give back by donating to Riley through the employee giving program?
A: Though I am only able to work in one area, through employee giving I know I am supporting other areas in this organization to succeed. Once I became a mother, I gained a different perspective of how lucky we are to have a renowned pediatric facility here in Indiana. Last fall I was on maternity leave and every time the “Hope Happens Here” commercial came on TV, I would get goosebumps. It made me look forward to getting back to work. I feel lucky to be able to say that.
Q: Do you have a message for members of the public who donate to Riley? What is the impact of those donations?
A: Riley is truly an amazing place. Supporting Riley means not only supporting the families who need our services but also supporting the staff who work so hard to help these patients on a daily basis. Research is also important at Riley. Our physicians and nurses are always piloting new projects because they want to provide the best, evidence-based practice for our families.
Q: What three words would you use to describe Riley Hospital?
A: Wonderful, dedicated and magical.
Q: Any fun facts you’d like to share about yourself/family?
A: My husband Matt is a home builder and we have two kids, Lucas (3 ½) and Lizzy (1)! I am also in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at IUPUI. Between work, kids and school we are quite busy, but love every minute of it!
Riley Hospital staff members and the public are invited to give through The Gift of Hope Happens Here holiday season giving campaign. Gifts are being matched by French Lick Resort (up to $200,000) through December 31.
