A Gift from the Heart: JPMorgan Chase
June 7, 2016
I am so proud to support Riley through my employer, JPMorgan Chase. Our company held a nationwide employee giving campaign last year on Giving Tuesday, and the state with the highest percentage of employees participating received $25,000 for a charity of their choice. Indiana won, and we selected Riley Children’s Foundation as our charity.
Riley is a cause that hits close to home for me. In late May of 2010, my dear friend’s daughter, Katherine Alderfer, was diagnosed with a very rare auto-immune disorder called Juvenile Dermatomyositis. This disease can cause debilitating symptoms including lung and heart issues, muscles pain and weakness, and severe fatigue just to name a few. Some children will experience remission but others will battle the disease their entire lives as there is no known cure.
Katherine is a twin and is now 10 years old. She began going to Riley over six years now. For months she went weekly, and then monthly, but flare-ups could also warrant spontaneous visits. Those times were even more devastating. Most trips included eight-hour infusions. The staff, nurses and doctors at Riley Hospital made these trips bearable. They loved Katherine every step of the way. They go above and beyond for their children.
Katherine is an amazing little girl with an incredible heart and spirit! She has remained positive and has been such a trooper through it all. She has turned her diagnosis into an incredible desire to find a cure for this devastating disease. The doctors, nurses, and staff at Riley Hospital have been unbelievable over the past years to my friend, her family and their girls. They have not only cared for her illness in an amazing way but they have loved Katherine through it all. They truly put their heart and souls into their work and are amazing! They are truly deserving of this donation, as my friend’s story is only one of thousands!
