Carrying Her Home

Dear Riley Friends,

My wheels are witness to so many beautiful moments.

Just look at this one.

Last week I carried a baby girl out of her room at Riley, through love-filled hallways, and out into the world for the very first time.

Her name is Juliana.

To see a child experience these firsts―sunlight on her face, the sound of birds, fresh air in her lungs―is a privilege unlike any other.

And I want you to know that YOU made this happen.

Juliana and her mother, Summer, have been through a lot.

Riley Maternal-Fetal Medicine experts were right there to help when Summer found out her daughter would be born needing major abdominal surgery.

Your gifts brought Juliana’s heroic caregivers to Riley, and your gifts are bringing her home.

As I prepared to carry Juliana toward her new life, I heard pure gratitude in her mother’s voice:

“Words can’t explain how I feel. It’s like the happiest moment of my life. I’ve been waiting for this moment forever, and she’s finally coming home. I just want to say ‘thank you’ for everything you’ve done for Juliana.”

Tonight, Juliana will sleep in her own crib at home.

These are the days when there are no adequate words, only these:

With gratitude,

The red Riley wagon is the preferred mode of transportation for many patients at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. She has become an iconic symbol of Indiana’s cherished children’s research hospital, which is entering a new phase of growth thanks to the tremendous support of donors.
