Hungry for Change
August 19, 2019
In 2018, Faegre Baker Daniels formally launched the sponsorship of Indianapolis’ biannual dining event Devour Indy, and proudly began our sponsorship of the charitable beneficiary of Devour: Riley Hospital for Children. But, in a way, our wagon has always been hitched to Riley.
My wife and daughter both did their residencies at Riley; you could say it is their home away home.
Indianapolis office leader Kathy Osborn first turned to Riley after the birth of her son in 2006. He was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) and had to undergo treatment and monitoring for the first two years of his life.
Chief Client Development Officer, Melanie Green still remembers trawling the NICU’s halls after her daughter came 6 ½ weeks early, fragile but a fighter nonetheless. Melanie watched her evolution as staff worked to boost her weight. Product liability partner, Jessica Benson Cox, had that same transformative experience with her now 6-year-old son, who was born with a rare genetic disorder and spent the first years of his life in and out of Riley for surgeries, therapies and appointments with specialists. In the beginning, Jessica was told he may never walk or talk. With amazing support from doctors and therapists, that Riley kid just started kindergarten.
There isn’t a person at FaegreBD – and likely in the entire city – who hasn’t been touched in some way, via family, friends or colleagues, by the incredible work being done at Riley. It’s that personal connection that made FaegreBD want to support Riley and identify novel ways to advance their mission. Our hunger to help is part of what inspired us to come aboard as the initial presenting sponsor of Devour Indy in the first place. As part of the deal, we built in a charitable component to support Riley Children’s Foundation, allowing diners to direct funds to the Foundation at participating restaurants. Together, we raised over $104,000 in 2018.
Those funds are currently being used to support progressive research and treatment across the pediatric spectrum – from neonatology to neurology. But this year, we want to take things higher. Will you join us?
