Jasper Is Home For Christmas

Jasper Chumley

As a toddler, Jasper Chumley from Evansville may not remember that he spent his holidays at a hospital. However, his mom will always remember.  She will remember how special the Riley Hospital staff made the holidays, but she will always remember how she longed to have Jasper at home instead.

Jasper’s best chance at survival came in the form of a cutting-edge new treatment called CAR-T therapy.  Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health started offering this therapy for high-risk leukemia patients just a year ago because of funding from generous donors like you.

Last year, Jasper and his mother, Robin McCarty, spent the holiday season at Riley.  Jasper was going through the most intense phase of his treatment. Robin bought a tiny Christmas tree at a dollar store and set it up in his hospital room in the Riley Cancer Center.  Jasper wore little Santa pajamas.  The Indianapolis Colts came in singing Christmas carols.  Santa made a visit as well.  Jasper woke up to surprise gifts on Christmas morning.  “Christmas at Riley was awesome,” said Robin.

This year, however, will be even sweeter.  Jasper’s successful treatment with CAR-T therapy is behind them.  If all continues to go well, he will be able to stay home for the holidays.  “I am looking forward to cooking a big meal for us, putting up a tree and sitting around the tree at home opening presents,” said Robin.

Thank you for giving Jasper and his family the most precious gift: a healthy holiday season at home.

French Lick Resort will double all individual gifts through December 31, 2019.  Make a gift today to help Riley kids like Jasper at BeTheHopeNOW.org
