Meet a Riley Holiday Artist!
Meet one of this year’s Riley holiday artists, Sydney Moss! Sydney was born at 25 weeks gestation weighing only 2 pounds, 4 ounces. She spent 10 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Riley Hospital for Children, where the nursing team cared for her and supported her parents, Stefanie and Richard. Today Sydney visits Riley once a year to monitor her thyroid development – the only lasting issue from her early birth.
We asked Sydney and her family for some inside scoop about being a featured artist for Riley. Thanks for sharing with us, Sydney! You can purchase her fireplace-themed ornament at local Speedway Convenience Stores and at RileyHolidayCards.org. We would also like to thank our Child Art Partner, Messer Construction Company for their support of our Child Art program.
If you could describe your perfect day, what would that look like?
I would sleep in a little on a Saturday before an all day softball tournament, play the best I’ve ever played and win the tournament. When I got home I would enjoy a home cooked meal with my family, playing Roblox on my phone while waiting for it to cook. Then we’d watch a game show we like called "America Says" until I went to bed, talking to my sister Chloe until we fell asleep.
The holidays may look a little different for everyone this year. Do you have a favorite holiday tradition from the past that you would like to share?
On Christmas Eve we celebrate with my dad’s family, playing games and opening gifts. The next morning I open gifts with my parents, sister and dog Princess. We cook and eat breakfast together and then go to my mom’s family where we eat and play games late into the evening. I’m exhausted, but it is fun and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
What inspired your artwork for your Riley ornament?
It makes me feel warm and cozy, which is how I like to feel during the holidays.
What does your family love most about Riley Hospital?
We love how much the staff cares. They not only provide great medical attention to your child, but they provide emotional support for the entire family. They take the time to answer questions and communicate with the parents so you always know what is going on. We always knew what to expect every day, and when things had to change due to something unexpected they would let us know immediately.
If your family could share a message with donors who support Riley Hospital, what would you say?
This year has been a difficult one. More than ever we are valuing loved ones and taking less for granted. Society as a whole is more aware of the sacrifices made by our healthcare heroes and the tremendous contributions they add to our health and quality of life. As the year comes to a close we hope families consider Riley in their annual gifting to support these heroes and the care they give to children.
