Oni Davenport, Westfield, Ind.

Today it’s our pleasure to introduce you to one of the 2016 Riley Champions presented by Kroger. Nine-year-old Oni Davenport from Westfield, Ind., has an infectious personality that has helped him cope with treatment for a rare, slow-growing brain tumor. The active football player has undergone surgery and is completing 70 weeks of chemotherapy.
We asked Oni to tell us about his Riley experiences in his own words.

Q: What is your age, your grade in school, and your favorite hobbies?
A: I’m 9 and I am in fourth grade. I like to play football in the fall and basketball in the winter. Football gives me a chance to get loose and hit somebody without getting in trouble.

Tell us about Riley staff members who are special to you, and how they helped you?
A: Dr. Jodi Smith was my brain surgeon. She was great. Nurse Marilyn pokes me every Tuesday and makes up a lot of funny jokes. And my HealthCare Specialist is also special to me. :)

Q: What are some ways you have been involved with giving back and helping others?
A: One way is going to Riley Dance Marathons. Coming up I’m going to Butler’s and Ball State’s Dance Marathon. GOOD THING I LIKE TO DANCE. :)

Q: What was your reaction when you learned you were chosen to be a Riley Champion?
A: At first I did not know what a Riley Champion was, but when my mom told me what it was I flipped out! I was so excited I wanted to give her a hug in the phone. :)

Q: What did it feel like when you were introduced at the Hope Happens Here Luncheon, and the audience gave you a standing ovation?
A: I felt embarrassed, but then when I got that standing ovation I felt a lot better.

Q: What advice do you have for other kids facing medical challenges?
A: “If I can do it, you can do it too.” That’s my line that I created when I was sick :)

Q: What would you like to say to the staff at Riley Hospital?
A: THANK YOU RILEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q: What message do you have for people in the community who support Riley by donating?
A: Thank you for donating to Riley and keep on DOING IT! :)
