Why I Give: John Andretti

For NASCAR/IndyCar driver John Andretti, Riley Hospital for Children is a place he started visiting at a young age. John’s first experience with Riley happened after his older brother was in a go karting accident. A few years later, his older sister was in a serious car accident. Following both of these traumatic incidents, John’s parents insisted their children be treated at Riley.

“My parents always wanted the best care possible for their kids,” said John. “There was absolutely no doubt in their minds that Riley was the only place that could provide that care.”

Through the years, John’s career has allowed him to regularly visit Riley Hospital and engage with a variety of Riley kids. From there, his passion for Riley has soared.

“The more Riley stories I hear and Riley families I meet, the more my passion for Riley grows,” said John. “It never gets smaller.”

Kroger Race for Riley presented by Cheerios has very humble beginnings. In 1997, John, along with a core team of individuals, founded Race for Riley and raised just under $4,000 for the hospital. Now entering its nineteenth year, Race for Riley is trying to top last year’s record breaking $327,000 raised for Riley.

“Race for Riley is about having fun,” said John. “We are like one big family and always have a blast working together to raise important funds for Riley kids. Every dollar truly matters.”

This year’s Kroger Race for Riley presented by Cheerios will kick off on Monday, July 6 when local Kroger stores begin an icon campaign benefitting the hospital. There will also be a variety of other events during the month of July and during Brickyard 400 week in Indianapolis.

On Monday, July 20, Indianapolis’ finest restaurants will serve up their best dishes at the Window World Progressive Dinner hosted at the Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.
